Tree Health Care (THC)
Give your Trees a little TLC with some THC!
It can be stressful experience when a tree dies. Not only is the lovely tree gone, it could fall over, and you have the unexpected hassle and expense of removing it. Plus whatever killed it could spread to surrounding trees. Premature death and disease can almost always be prevented with the right knowledge, a little vigilance, and proper tree care.
Tree Health Care (THC) can be defined as a proactive approach in keeping trees healthy through monitoring and cultural practices. When we identify a problem we use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which is a way of controlling pest problems with the least impact to the environment.
Knowing the species of tree is critical in preventing and diagnosing tree health issues. We can begin by separating hardwood trees from palms. Palms are categorized as grasses and have a different biology than hardwood trees. Did you know pine trees hate fertilizer? IPS beetles attack stressed slash pines, Palmetto bud weevils colonize in Canary Island and Bismarck palms, and Queen palms are highly susceptible to Ganoderma butt rot.
Major Root Problems of Urban Trees
-
Soil Compaction
-
Tree roots need both water and air to function. Foot traffic, construction equipment, even rain drops crashing down on bare soil all lead to soil compaction constricting the flow of water and air.
-
Mulch beds and construction barriers help prevent compaction.
-
Root aeration with air spades can do miracles in severely compacted soils.
-
-
Root Girdling
-
Root girdling is when one or more tree roots grow around the tree base choking vascular tissues which can cause die-back and death to the tree.
-
Girdling roots can be easily removed with pruning saws.
-
Root girdling starts in rootbound nursery containers so be vigilant when planting.
-
-
Competing grasses
-
Trees do not like grasses around them. Grass roots are aggressive feeders. They will outcompete tree roots for water and minerals. It's why you don't see trees in the Great Plains.
-
Keep grasses away from the tree base by creating a bed or ring around the trunk area. This is especially true for newly planted trees.

Pruning Tips to Maintain Tree Health
-
Avoid excessive pruning.
-
Trees need their leaves. Chlorophyl is produced in leaves through photosynthesis and is critical for tree survival.
-
Large, misplaced pruning cuts are entry points for fungi and decay
-
If large branch removal is necessary use ANSI A300 pruning standards to facilitate the tree's natural healing mechanism
-
-
Don't use pruning paint.
-
Pruning paint traps moisture and inhibits healing
-
-
For palm trees
-
Minimize removal of live fronds
-
Time pruning according to flowering schedule
-
Sanitize pruning saws

Supplemental Fertilization for Palm Trees
-
Why Fertilize Palms?
-
Most species of palms were introduced from foreign locations, as such, they need help acclimating to Florida's sandy, nutrient deficient soils with supplemental fertilization.
-
A well-fed palm should display 360° of green fronds. Fertilizer deficiencies symptoms include yellow and orange discoloration of leaf tissue, distorted growth, and premature death of mature fronds. Palm trees crave both macro and micro nutrients and more often than not suffer from lack of nutrients. Potassium being the most prevalent deficiency followed by Magnesium and Manganese.
-
-
Fertilizer Injections
-
A recent, game-changing innovation in plant health care is a system of injecting fertilizers directly into the trunk of palm trees. One, simple, low-cost micro injection results in 100% translocation of fertilizers into the palm leaves and lasts up to two years.

Top 3 Palm Tree Killers in Sarasota
-
Ganoderma zonatum
-
The Ganoderma fungus can attack most palm species, but it's favorite hosts are Queen, areca, and reclinata palms. Unfortunately, it's a death sentence for the palm and currently, there are no treatments for it. Conk growing at the base of the palm trunk is confirmation of the disease. If seen, you want to remove the tree before it falls over.
-
-
Palmetto weevil
-
The palmetto weevil loves Bismarck and Canary Island date palms. If the top of the palm (apical meristem) starts to bend over, immediately check and treat for palm bud weevils. Like most insects, they attack stressed trees, so be sure to fertilize and to not over-prune your palm trees.
-
-
Lethal Bronzing
-
Phoenix palm species are the primary targets of this phytoplasma spread by an insect called the Americal Palm Cixiid. The disease has killed many expensive Sylvester palms in our area, so be vigilant because effective treatments are available.

What happened to my pine tree?
-
One day your pine tree looks green and healthy, the next day it's brown. It's actually a series of events that led up to its demise. In the end, it's pine beetles that killed the tree. In Sarasota we are talking about Ips beetles and slash pines. It's important to note that only a stressed pine can be penetrated by the tunneling insects and they can smell it like ribs on a barbeque.
-
-
So, why all the stressed pine trees?
-
It's usually a combination of factors. Recently the combination is hurricane Milton and lack of rain. Hurricane winds can cause internal cracks, hidden within the tree. In response, the tree uses energy reserves to heal the damage, but it takes time. Then, when we sustain a drought that could be six months or a year after the hurricane, the tree does not have the energy to defend itself from the patiently waiting beetles.
-
-
How can we prevent beetle attack?
-
Once the beetles are in, it's too late. You know they're there when you inspect the trunk and see small, reddish frass mounds coming out of little holes in the bark. There are preventative insecticides available to help stop infestation. But remember, the beetles can only damage stressed trees so we want to limit pesticide application to stressful events. Construction, hurricanes, and drought top the list in Sarasota. A common misconception is that you should quickly remove the tree to prevent the beetles from spreading to neighboring pines. Ips beetles are already all over the place. If the pine tree is sufficiently stressed, it will be attacked.
